Private Label vs OEM vs Custom Cut & Sew: What’s the Difference?

Private Label vs OEM vs Custom Cut & Sew: What’s the Difference?

When you're planning to work with a garment factory, one of the first decisions you'll face is:
What type of production service do I need?

At HEM APPAREL, we offer all three: Private Label, OEM, and Custom Cut & Sew. Each method has its own pros, limitations, and best use cases. Let’s break it down.

🏷️ 1. Private Label

What it is:
You choose from ready-made products offered by the manufacturer and simply add your brand label or logo.

✅ Pros:

  • Fast turnaround (products are already made)

  • Low MOQ

  • No design or development needed

🚫 Cons:

  • Limited style, fit, and fabric options

  • Less differentiation — other brands may use the same base

Best for: Merch stores, promotional apparel, early-stage brands testing the market

🧰 2. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

What it is:
You send your design idea or tech pack, and the factory produces it using their own patterns, processes, and supply chain — based on your specifications.

✅ Pros:

  • Medium level of customization (fabric, fit, print, trims)

  • Faster than full development

  • More control than private label

🚫 Cons:

  • Some limitations in design structure (based on factory’s capabilities)

  • Requires a tech pack or clear brief

Best for: Growing fashion brands building consistent product lines

✂️ 3. Custom Cut & Sew

What it is:
You design everything from scratch — silhouette, fabric, fit, construction — and the factory develops your pattern, samples, and produces it from zero.

✅ Pros:

  • Full creative freedom

  • Unique products that reflect your brand DNA

  • Ideal for complex garments or new innovations

🚫 Cons:

  • Higher cost and longer development time

  • Requires experience or strong design input

  • Usually higher MOQ

Best for: Designer brands, fashion startups with a distinct identity, streetwear collections
