If you're working with a garment manufacturer, a tech pack is one of the most important documents you'll ever use.
But if you're a first-time brand or merch creator, it can look overwhelming at first glance.
At HEM APPAREL, we receive hundreds of tech packs — from clean, professional ones to napkin sketches. Here’s a clear breakdown of what’s inside a tech pack and why it matters.
🧵 1. Flat Sketches
-
These are technical line drawings of the garment (front, back, and side views)
-
Show construction details: seams, panels, cuffs, hems, etc.
-
Often in black & white, not fashion illustrations
✅ Why it matters: gives the factory an accurate visual of what to build
📐 2. Measurement Specs (Size Chart)
-
Lists key body points (chest, length, sleeve...) and corresponding dimensions
-
Usually includes tolerance (+/- allowed variance)
-
Separate sheets for each size (S–M–L...) or base size + grading rules
✅ Why it matters: ensures accurate fit and consistent sizing
🧾 3. BOM (Bill of Materials)
-
A table listing all components: fabric, rib, zipper, buttons, labels, tags, thread...
-
Specifies type, GSM, color, source, and code if needed
-
May include images or fabric swatches
✅ Why it matters: helps the factory source correctly and price accurately
🎨 4. Artwork & Placement
-
Print or embroidery design files + dimensions
-
Shows placement: front center, chest left, back neck, sleeve...
-
May include color references (Pantone) and application method (DTF, screen print, embroidery...)
✅ Why it matters: avoids misalignment or scaling issues in production
🧵 5. Stitching & Construction Details
-
Notes on stitching type (single-needle, overlock...), seam finishes, bartack placement
-
Helpful for complex styles like outerwear, pants, or streetwear cuts
✅ Why it matters: ensures durability and accuracy in how the garment is assembled
🏷 6. Labeling & Packaging
-
Shows label types (neck label, care label, hangtag), position, and size
-
Notes on folding, polybag, barcoding, carton info for export
✅ Why it matters: helps with retail-readiness and brand presentation
🧠 HEM APPAREL’s Tip:
You don’t need to create a perfect tech pack from day one.
Even a basic version — with sketch, key measurements, and artwork — can help the factory move faster and avoid errors.
We offer tech pack assistance and templates if you’re just starting out.
